Transformation of India and Transformation of UP:

On Sunday 6th Feb, Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies (FIIDS http://fiids-usa.org)  hosted a panel on Transformation of India and Transformation of Uttar Pradesh under leaderships of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Mr. Shantanu Gupta, an author of ‘The Monk who became Chief Minister’ and ‘The Monk who Transformed UP’ and Mr. Vibhuti Jha, a US-based business leader and political analyst, participated in the panel.

Mr. Vibhuti Jha focussed his comments on transformational leadership of Prime Minister Modi as, “Prime Minister Modi is an authentic ‘karmayogi’(selfless worker) and the same is true with Yogiji. India needs karmayogi and not bhogis (corrupt). Karmayogi has the ability to deliver without expecting back for personal benefits. Leadership is about serving and giving the best. They are makers of the mood (regeneration of aspirations and desires) of the enterprise which Modiji cultivated since 2014 and set direction for the future. There is a determination to transform India. This vision, regeneration of ambitions, and creation of a conducive environment like programs startup India led into India has about 80 unicorns (billion dollar valuation). But it’s not enough, we want to support them to be hundreds of billion dollars enterprises.”

Mr. Vibhuti Jha further said, “Both Prime Minister Modi and Yogi understood that the transformation requires big changes including the rules. While it is easy to say, it is difficult to achieve. Both of them demonstrated courage and leadership to make changes in rules and policies. Hence, India is now transforming from agriculture and industrial to digital era. India has reached to a cusp of technological innovation and transformations where coordination, cooperation, collaboration and mobilization are important. Both the Prime minister and Yogi ji should take advantage of the demographic dividend but also focus on ensuring that it does not turn into a liability.”

Shantanu Gupta explained that Yogi Adityanath transformed the under-developed Uttar Pradesh towards development, bringing crime under control and transforming transportation infrastructure. U.P. has been transformed into a peaceful state, where people can move freely, and women feel safe.

In his talk, Shantanu Gupta brought up lesser known facts about Yogi as “Yogi was a successful Member of Parliament 5 times, who asked 284 questions, raised 3 private member bills in 16th Loksabha and had ~77% attendance.  He also had vast administrative experience prior to becoming chief minister as he successfully managed over 40 educational, medical and social institutions with over 80,000 students.”

On law-and-order, Mr Gupta mentioned, “Yogi’s gave priority to the decriminalization of Uttar Pradesh. He empowered police to hunt down and arrest criminals, sidelined corrupt police and their nexus with criminals and also recruited 1.3 lakh of additional police. Under his regime, women were granted the protection of the law. With a competition to respond faster, the UP police came 3rd in emergency response time at international level. This resulted in a safer environment where women feel safe to freely travel in the evenings, which was not the case earlier”.

On another example of development he covered “ The state is now called Expressway Pradesh as it became the one to have the longest of the expressways, includes Yamuna Expressway, Agra Lucknow Expressway, Purvanchal Expressway, Bundelkhand Expressway, Gorakhpur Link Expressway, and coming soon is the grand Ganga Expressway. The tally comes to be around 1800KM. The state is on the path to complete 15,000KM rural roadways.”

Mr. Gupta also said, “Yogi eliminated cheating culture both from education systems (exams) as well as from Public Distribution systems. The UP PDS was plagued with leakage and diversion of grains. THe Yogi government installed biometric point-of-sale(POS) at 80,000, canceled 2.5million ghost ration cards, installed GPS-based tracking of distribution vehicles and SMS based notifications to the beneficiaries. This not only gave the food grains to the needy people but also saved 1600 crores rupees.”

Finally, Mr. quoted Australian Member of Parliament Craig Kelly wondering whether the CM can be loaned to Australia.
